Scope and Contents
1873 Letters from January, August, November and Logbook.
1873 January 2 from L. F. Liscom (Boston) to Lemuel Liscom (Hinsdale).
(Letter relates writing to Samuel (a farmer), cold weather and putting up a railroad bridge in Groton, drafting plans for a new Depot for the Eastern Railroad, consolidation of the Fitchburg RR with the Lowell RR and both using the New Depot that he erected last winter and spring. Also, company just closed a contract to build an iron bridge over the Merrimack in spring, also has a nearly built bridge at Tyngsboro above Lowell at 650 ft. long. L. F. remarks he has good standing with the company but doesn’t make enough money, so he tries to get new lodging. Also in this lengthy letter he is sending money to help Samuel. He observes that several ships were run aground or lost. There is smallpox in the city and he and wife, Dollie, are vaccinated. Dollie paints and L. F. describes a painting she has made of Yosemite Valley (possibly knows about from Charles H. Liscom). Levi Liscom is also mentioned in letter.)
1873 August 3 from L. Frank Liscom (Bradford, MA) to Lemuel Liscom
(Hinsdale, N.H.). (Letter discusses bridge business of building stone piers with timber cribs and sinking piles. He is not pleased with being a salaried man although the company pays all his expenses. He inquires about Samuel and mentions Lucius and Susie and that he had an accident but is again well).
1873 November 10 from L. F. Liscom (Bradford MA) to Lemuel Liscom
(Hinsdale, N.H.). (Letter urgently requests father to contact Samuel about how many square planks of white oak they can put on board cars at Hinsdale or Brattleboro by December 10. The original timber supplier has failed to furnish the timber so a bridge that L.F. is working on can be finished. The Liscoms have a saw and planning mill in Hinsdale).
1873-1874, 1876-78 Logbook 4 ½” x 7”, smooth brown calfskin. (The earlier years are in the back of the logbook and the later years in the front).
Lists the time log of laborers on bridge projects, notes regarding D. H. Andrews, the shop superintendent and later as builder of roof truss members and expenses for L. F. Liscom).
