January 1931 1931 January 6 from Jerome De la Mothe (Victoria, B.C. Canada) to Beamish (Handwritten letter of personal remarks regarding witnesses to give evidence before the Joint Committee, Ormsley Gore as Colonial Secretary, thanks for letter from Bilbao and the Spanish rebels who escaped to Lisbon, Alfred Mond’s death, writing to Arthur C. Howard, remarks about Victoria and land cost. A note from Beamish indicates that he has forwarded this letter to P.J.S. (Sinclair)) 1931 January 26 from Tobacco Federation of the British Empire (London) (typed reproduction reporting that it is proposed to print a series of articles dealing with each country in the Empire that produces tobacco. There is a inked handwritten note from Beamish indicating that this Federation has sought his help and he is on a committee with C. Ponsonby dated February 3,1931) 1931 January 27 from H.H. Beamish (Antwerp) to Sinclair (typed letter saying that de la Mothe will return to Moshi by way of S. Africa when he feels he is no longer of use in London. Beamish reports that he has been able to keep the interest of Peers and M. P’s regarding “Our Cause” and is in constant contact with P B Williams. Beamish reports meeting Archdeacon Owens and wants him to join his platform about “forced labour” but Beamish declines because he doesn’t agree with Owens concept. Beamish has a different idea of “forced labour.” Beamish’s attitude is that Cameron is personally pushing Native Paramountcy. He expresses the hope that the European Association does not collapse.) 1931 January 30 from Williams (Tanganyika Estates Dar es Salaam) to Beamish (typed original letter acknowledges a letter received from Spain. Williams reports that the “political situation here is just at it generally is, that few people who are at all interested hold occasional meetings from which nothing results.” He understands that Lead and Bown want to get away in early March. Donald Cameron is leaving on same boat as Port Manager. The depression is hitting the country badly. Sisal is at £15 per ton. Officials now have to do 30 months without leave. [Williams notes “isn’t It really wicked to keep them in this foul climate so long?”] The Boshoff- Howe-Browne case is still on. Having a particularly hot season; the N.E. Monsoon failed. A Belgian ship went ashore and the lighterage people are getting a good rake off unloading the cargo. Beamish notes in black ink that he Rec’d Feb 21/31, and sends it on to P.J. Sinclair in Moshi)
