1931 February 2 from Beamish (London) to Sinclair (typed letter reporting that Beamish has been asked to give evidence to the Joint Committee but is waiting to know what Lead and Bown are going to do about the Native question. Beamish tells Sinclair that he is still lobbying from the Settlers point of view. Beamish says that Bown knows nothing about handling black people. Beamish tells Sinclair to contact Wyndham as he is friendly disposed to the cause. He reports that de la Mothe is on his way back to Moshi but he will stay on in London as long as he is useful and funds last.) 1931 February 5 from Beamish (London) to Sinclair (typed letter remarking on the Rhodesian “row” that got refunded taxes for the Rhodesian people. Sadly these types of people are lacking in Tanganyika. He reports attending the Joint Committee and heard Hilton Young examined. Beamish feels convinced that nothing further will be done to push Paramountcy. He says “ We can thank Donald Cameron for this unholy legacy ….. the BLACK Paper on Native Paramountcy should form a conspicuous part of the monu- ment.” ) 1931 February 5 from Chiari Giulini (Sigismundsglueck, Moshi) to Beamish (London) (typed copy remarking that he has learned from Sinclair the Courageous and successful work Beamish and de la Mothe have done in the interests of Tanganyika and encloses a check for 1000 shillings) 1931 February 7 from H.H.M. Putter (London) to H.H. Beamish (c/o “East Africa” London) (typed note of invitation to meet again to renew acquaint- tance. Beamish handwritten note saying he can’t recall meeting Putter.) 1931 February 8 from A. Sypes? (Royal Empire Society) to Beamish (handwritten note about a scheme to lease property in Blackpool. Beamish types a note that he knows nothing about it and isn’t interested but forwards the information on to P B Williams in Dar es Salaam.) 1931 February 8 from P.B. Williams (Dar es Salaam) to Beamish (handwritten letter says “political activity is quite dead & Cameron having departed seems likely to remain so. Sinclair seems to be doing good propaganda to get some sort of thanks for you and de la Mothe. Note in red crayon says rec’d March 3/31.) 1931 February 12 from Tobacco Federation of the British Empire (London) (typed Agenda of the meeting of the Provisional Council. Among the items on the Agenda are membership replies from Southern Rhodesia and Correspondence with the Rhodesia Tobacco Association. Two penciled Notes: one from Beamish dated 22/2/31 - send this to P.J. Sinclair Moshi Indicating Major Elliot, M.P. is a good friend to East Africa as well as to tobacco growers; other note indicates who was present at meeting – Major Elliot, Col. Franklin, J.A.Palethorpe, A.C. Parker, H.H. Beamish – Downie) 1931 February 12 from “Tut” (House of Commons) to “Lall” (penciled hand written note says “Sir Herbert Neild M.P. for Ealing says he thinks he has been in correspondence with Councilman Knight, but has not met him. Major Edmondson once employed Knight and is ready to see you anytime on the tobacco street?” On same note is a remark from Beamish dated 1931 February 19 “Rhodesian tobacco planters have inspanned our concern called The Empire Tobacco Federation of which J. Elliot M.P. is the chairman, & I make all three M.S.s work on East African affairs as well.” 1931 February 13 Tanganyika Opinion Friday newspaper article marked with red “Planning Congress Government? Echo of Christmas day Arrests” relates Revelations made regarding arrests made in Bombay, India) 1931 February 14 from H.H. Beamish (London) to (P.B.) Williams (typed letter reporting that he got information at a dinner in House of Commons that Foreign Office has made complications for Congo Basin and International Court at the Hague and the best thing for the Colonies and Territories could do is “worry out their own salvation.” Beamish refers to the Joint Committee as a very “Disjointed Committee” because of the Paramountcy issue) 1931 February 17 from Beamish (London) to (P.B.) Williams (typed letter refer- ring to the “Disjointed Committee” and its continuing examination of Hilton Young. Eight members out of 20 on the committee were absent so the row raised by Paramountcy and Closer Union issues is still of interest. Beamish reports that all sorts of complications with the Congo Basin Treaties, Hague International Courts, Belgian, French, Portuguese & German Governments getting in on the issues. Ormsby Gore was not present at meeting and only Sandeman Allan & Lord Stanley were present. Beamish’s information”is that the whole unhappy business will simply peter out, but that in order to save their face, the farce of keeping on the Committee & taking hot air evidence will be continued by the Government. Beamish reports that he was invited to a League of Nations luncheon and sat at the same table as the Macgregor Ross family and enjoyed himself.) 1931 February 17 Typed note “The business is developing normally; we have Three good agents who sell increasing quantities, and another one who is placing Kenya coffee with principal hotels, restaurants and cafes. I am now supplying Whitbread Taverns, and I am trying Osborne House in Brussels & Antwerp. No news from Spain yet…..” 1931 February 17 from H.H.M. Putter (London) to H.H. Beamish (London) (typed letter extending thanks for “what the Governor Might have Said” which must has caused a flutter in Dar es Salaam and marked as a leg pull. Re. MICA Putter indicates he might be able to help. Note in ink on this letterhead from Beamish “I have seen Putter who lost money over Klotz. He is deeply in Mica & wants supplies from Rhodesia which I may be able to influence.” Dated February 20, 1931. 1931 February 17 from “Tut” (House of Commons) to “Lall” (hand written note Saying that Wallace knew Knight as a “difficult” agent in a London Constituency but is not averse to helping tobacco growing. Additional Information about going to Portsmouth and Buckingham and offering tickets (presumably to get into House of Commons). Reports that Lane has not heard from “Lall.” Note follows from Beamish follows dated: 1931 February 20 from Beamish to Williams: “I have supplied my brother and Leslie Boyce M.P. with 22 questions on Tanganyika affairs.” According to Beamish Boyce visited N. Rhodesia and is willing to help. 1931 February 19 from H.H. Beamish to Secretary of State for the Colonies (typed carbon two page list of 20 questions regarding Tanganyika, Kilimanjaro Planters Association, Henn Railway Commission, Sir Julian Huxley visit, any of the Songea Area native chiefs under arrest, misappropriation of public funds by any chief of the Wangoni tribe, lighterage matters, special committee to study further uses of Sisal Fibre Hemp, Pangani Falls Scheme. Note: These questions have been put by Admiral T.P.H. (Tufton Percy Hamilton) Beamish. CB.M.P. and H. Leslie Boyce M.P. 1931 February 21 from F. S. Joelson (London) to H.H. Beamish (London) (Typed note on “East Africa” letterhead “Walsh and I have been chatting about those questions, and he has suggested several others. “I had a yarn yesterday with de la Mothe, who promised me that he would ask you to get your friends in the House to ask these questions in the course of ordinary parliamentary business if an opportunity does not present itself on Monday.” Beamish note on this letterhead in ink to P.B.W. “I have handed the additional questions to Leslie Boyce M.P. and will send you copies of his and my brother’s later.”) 1931 February 25 from Beamish (London) to Sinclair (typed letter reports that de la Mothe arrived in London . Both men attended the Joint Committee meeting when Sir E. Grigg was examined by Lord Phillimore, Humphrey Leggett also was there. Beamish mentions meeting Leslie Boyce who apparently will put the East African questions in the House. Beamish introduced de la Mothe (referred to a J), Joelson and Walsh to Boyce who had visited Northern Rhodesia previously. Beamish indicates he is sending the list questions to P.B. Williams and Sinclair. He says that Donald Cameron will arrive shortly to give evidence including Macgregor Ross, Archdeacon Owens, officials of the Native Dept., the Indians and Native Witnesses. The main issue now is Closer Union. Complications exist as to Congo Basin Treating, the International Court, terms of the Mandate for Tanganyika. Beamish feels he should look after the settlers interest because the Joint East African Board which should is not. Beamish reports that he got his brother to help him with the settlers issues and the Tobacco Federation of Rhodesia and arranged some good meetings for Rhodesian Delegates.) 1931 February 25 from Beamish (London) to (P.B.) Williams (typed letter saying an enclosed letter is sent to Sinclair of Moshi with copies of the questions on East Africa affairs as put to House by Boyce and Beamish brother. He notes that Sir John Sandeman Allan, chairman of Joint East African Board is useless from the Settler point of view. De la Mothe is back from Canada but leaves for Moshi around March 12. Similar as letter to Sinclair.)
