1931 March 3 from Kenya Products (Antwerp) to Sinclair (typed original Letter saying that “things are not too bright in Tanganyika nowadays.” Depression in Belgium is as bad as it is in Tanganyika but Kenya Products has started a new venture, importing COFFEE. The “mélange” sold as KENYA, is composed for about 2/3 …of Kenya, and 1/3 of Tanganyika. Kenya Products has no direct imports from Tanganyika; but if Sinclair knew of people in Moshi who would wish to, should contact the Firm directly. This letter continues with the price advantages of dealing in Belgium.) 1931 March 3 from “Tut” (Rr-Adm Tufton Percy Hamilton Beamish) (House of Commons embossed note paper) to “Lall?” (Henry Hamilton ?) penciled note reports on “Tut” health and question “if there is real trouble with Wangoni or others it is duty of opposition to force it out of govt! Anyway there never was a more inept administration.” On reverse side of note is a handwritten note from Adm. B.’s private secretary saying “Have sent H.H. Beamish extract from Hansard each time questions have appeared.” 1931 March 5 from H.H. Beamish (House of Commons card) to Walsh “These will interest you. Please send them to P.J. Sinclair P.O. Moshi, Tanganyika when you have finished with them.” 1931 March 5 from J.S. Joelson (East Africa newspaper) to Major C.L. Walsh (London) (typed letter saying that he is sending papers left by Beamish regarding House of Commons questions, original cheque for £50 someone sent Beamish from Moshi as a contribution for the efforts Beamish and de la Mothe are doing, letters from Dar es Salaam interesting, Beamish going to see Boyce at House of Commons for information about Songea trouble.) 1931 March 11 (four printed pages of questions and oral answers from the House Of Commons including Rear-Admiral Beamish) 1931 March 11 (Newspaper article from The Times title “In India” relates about Mr. Baldwin’s policy, the India Committee and “Mr. Winston Churchill and his Diehards have completely overcome Mr. Baldwin….” Scanned 1931 March 12 from H.H. Beamish (London) to Walsh (handwritten note on note card and envelope from Royal Societies Club say Beamish will call on Walsh for papers sent to him by Joelson, have the draft of £50 from the Moshi Italian so Beamish can give half to de la Mothe who is leaving London.) 1931 March 12 from Jerome de la Mothe (London) to Beamish (typed copy reports that thanks to the intervention of Beamish and de la Mothe, M P’s are interesting themselves seriously in East African affairs. Two copies.) 1931 March 12 from P.J. Sinclair (Moshi) to Beamish (London) (cablegram “Lead all viglet see speech L C against paper – Bown Lead acknowledge (right?) (Leg Council?) and ask for your help officially at last. Sinclair Note by H.H.B. – Above is exach copy of cable & has been “decoded” according to my understanding. March 13/31) 1931 March 12 from Chiare Giulini (Sigismundsglueck Estate, Moshi) to Beamish? (typed letter indicating that Sinclair gave to Giulini Beamish’s letters to read and notes that the German settlers are ready to quit collaboration with British over the Closer Union question. German settlers are more numerous than British in Moshi and want the Closer Union question given first priority, not second as the British want. Mr. Troost, as leader of the German planters, wants to discuss matters openly. Beamish’s plan to accept invitation of Ludendorf, Hitler and Reventlow has aroused great interest among the German settlers suggesting that they might find a solution.) 1931 March 13 from H.H. Beamish (London) to Count Chiara Giulini (Moshi) (typed letter giving thanks for the draft as a generous donation and comments that he (Beamish) “feels satisfied that Europeans and Natives in East Africa are going to receive just and fair treatment without introducing any question of Paramountcy from either side. You will be glad to hear that many of our Socialist friends on this side are now realizing that Europeans and Natives usually live on very friendly terms with each other in East Africa and that white papers on Paramountcy are liable to retard the progress of a country instead of assisting to develop it.” In red crayon COPY and PTO on opposite side is synopsis of Giulini letter) 1931 March 13 from H.H. Beamish (London) to Sinclair (typed letter saying that he has received letter from Italian friend (Giulini) and donation. Beamish expresses how touched he is that Giulini, as a citizen of a foreign nation, has been the only one of the European community to dip into his own pocket to acknowledge the work of de la Mothe and Beamish. Beamish discusses the questions recently raised in the House of Commons. Beamish says he is glad that Sinclair has fixed up in satisfactory manner the entities in connection with the K (Kenya?) Planters Assoc. and hopes the European Association will be handled in the same way. Beamish intends to return to East Africa when the Joint Committee has finished.) 1931 March 13 from Beamish (London) to Major Conrad Walsh (London) (typed copy saying he relies on Walsh to see to it that House of Commons get a copy of East Africa). 1931 March 13 from H.H. Beamish (London) to Count Chiara Giulini (Moshi) (typed copy thanks for letter of February 5 and generous donation.) 1931 March 14 from H. Leslie Boyce (House of Commons) to F.S. Joelson (East Africa newspaper) (typed copy on yellow paper says “With regard to the Reply given by W.R. Smith to my question about the British Industries Fair, he gave the House the impression that the Press representatives Generally knew that their invitation cards should be handed in, in exchange for Season Tickets. Dr. Drummond Shields spoke to me about account spending of East African Government on steamship passages for Government officials leaving the Colonies, the Colonial budget. Beamish adds a Note regarding the Admiralty purchase of sisal from East Africa. Two copies.) 1931 March 16 from H.H. Beamish to P.J. Sinclair to J. de La Mothe to P.B. Williams (typed note indicating the five questions listed are the amended Form of the question on Sisal for the Admiralty and the question as drafted In Conrad Walsh’s letter of HHB of March 14 has been withdrawn.) Scanned 1931 March 18 from George F. Ulmer(?) (Bournemouth) to Sinclair (handwritten letter on “Tytherley” letterhead says glad to receive copy of Hansard and that the East African question is being discussed in Committee. He intends to get a ticket for the Strangers Gallery to hear all the “Rot” of the debate. He indicates his leave is nearly finished and he returns to Tanganyika in April.) 1931 March 18 from Kenya Products (Antwerp) to Beamish (typed letter reports receiving a letter from P.B. Williams who is promoting the lime business and reported on Nicholls who is under contract to Kenya Products but is not attending to business. Count Giulini’s letter has been read and appreciated. The Kenya Products business is progressing. In red crayon Recd March 20/31 and circled Send to P.B. Williams.) 1931 March 18 from Beamish (London) to de la Mothe (typed copy expressing sadness on parting and remarks that a letter from Stephens of the Seychelles also agrees in fighting for the rights of Settlers. Also mentioned are Conrad Walsh, Sinclair, Boyce, H. Snell, and Giulini.) 1931 March 18 from Beamish (London) to Sinclair (typed original indicates receipt of cable that Lown and Lead not arrived. Remarks about the many enemies the Settlers have regarding the East African questions. Two copies – one original, one copy) 1931 March 19 from F.S. Joelson (East Africa newspaper) to H.H. Beamish (London) (typed letter on letterhead acknowledges Beamish’s action to suggest that the House of Commons get a subscription to the East Africa newspaper could possibly shake them up.) 1931 March 20 (Daily Mail newspaper article “Respect Becomes Contempt” by Sir Michael F. O’Dwyer article in response to “Ashamed to be British” by A.E.W. the two articles relate to the Hindu situation in India.) Scanned 1931 March 31 from Beamish (London) to Sinclair (typed letter reporting on the Joint Committee examinations of Uganda planter named Major Renton, Canon Leakie representing the Kenya missions, Donald Cameron of Tanga- nyika. Beamish reports that he attends all the examinations as a representa- tive of the Settler element. He notes how deep the “anti-Settler poison has been distributed” and thinks the “officials at the East African Dependencies should do something to counteract the pernicious propaganda against the Settler element.” Beamish reflects on what it “used to be like in the old days.”
