1851 May 31 from Bark Mazeppa (San Francisco) reports that ship is ready for sea but dreadful fire has rendered business dull, ship is up for sale, freight or charter but sale might take place next week, then captain is clear of her. On board is captain, the cook and Joseph Beatley. A great many ship masters out of employment. Uncle Richard Evans and Lewis are well and will sail for Manilla. Girdler hopes to see family in the course of the year. An “envelope” with red wax seal addressed to Miss Sarah J. Girdler Marblehead Massachusetts U.S.A..
