Scope and Contents
This scrap book is filled newspaper clippings and images detailing the the events of the Un-American activity committee at the time; James Roosevelt pushed for a motion to abolish/limit the investigative powers of the Un-american committee but was blocked by Sam Rayburn; Eleanor Roosevelt joined a group of the American people to push for the abolishment of the HUAC; Walter proposes a plan to make the HUAC a committee a part of internal security and immigration but was shot down by Sam Rayburn; 2 political cartoons mocking Walter's proposal for change; Walter introduced multiple bills to overturn Supreme court rulings, tighten anti-red laws, and expand espionage to apply everywhere but was opposed by the Emergency Civil liberties committee; Many held in comempt by the HUAC for refusing to answer quetions about their potential communist status and faced jail time; International League for Rights of Man reported many captured Hugarian refugees were either killed, imprisoned or shipped off to Russia; A contact from communist Russia revealed initimate and important details about the soviet chief in Kremlin Russia, Walter did not reveal where conatc was located or the hearing process; Mexico and Argentina outed multiple communists diplomats becuase they had helped with anti-government rioting; FBI chief Hoover warned that there was a new threat of communists in positions of power in the USA; Supreme court blocked state departments attempts to force those who applied for a passport to sign an noncommunists affidavit, starting with Alger Hiss; People claimed communists were running churhces; Pro-Castro protestors fought anti-castro protestors in Miami, Florida; Political cartoon mocking the greediness of HUAC; The American Bar association studied and scathingly critisized how the Supereme Court deals with communists; Many witnesses and those on trial claimed the 5th amendment to not answer questions about communists or their affliation; Walter introduced bill that banned union officials from interfereing with defense shipments in times of emergency; Harry Bridges condemed as a communist who is helping communists union with shipping; Harry Truman and the HUAC faced off during a hearing, with Truman calling for the HUAC to be limited; Supreme court clarified and revised sedition laws inclsuing those regarding communists; Walter claimed artists who submitted pieces for the American National exposition in Moscow are all communists, USIA stands by the artists; Policitcal cartoon mocking Walter's policing of art; President Eisenhower backs art exhibit;
