Scope and Contents
This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, photos, and artciles detailing immigration at the time. President Eisenhower continued to push for reformation of immigration laws in Immigration and Naturalization Act; Oppenheimer claimed the immigration laws barred top atomic scientists from entering the USA, Walter claimed it was baseless nonsense; Walter and Celler fought for the chairman seat of Immigration committee, Celler lost; U.S immigration services pushed for a bill to prevent deported immigrants from appealing multiple times to delay deportation; Celler tried to replace McLeod as Refugee aid chief; Senate and house members pushed for legislation changes to the immigration law; Walter accused an immigration consultant of being associated with communists but was proven and admitted he was wrong on one of his charges, encouraed more people to get rid of HUAC; Political cartoon mocking Walter for his political slander; New bill offered that would replace the McCarran-Walter Act which would shift the quota and get rid of the specified bars against Africans and Asian immigration; Walter claimed the quota shift is to help Russian communists get into America; Soviet youth got visas to the U.S; Corsi appointed to the as chief of Refugee aid chief; Walter pushed for internal investigation of House judiciary committee due to people doing private sponsorships for immigrants who don't meet the bar; Corsi dismissed from job supposedly unfairly, refused to take another post; Walter had set up a TV program interview to dispel remarks calling him racist against Italian-Americans, sources gave many instances where he said racist remarks towards people; Political cartoon depiciting the ousting of Corsi; Political cartoon depicting the immigration administration ousting Corsi and their refusal of new immigration policies;Corsi's dismissal caused a political unease over his sudden firing and he potential influence some members have over other's jobs and certain departments; implemented refugee relief act 1953 had the highest number of visas given out to refugees in its history; Harold H. Tittmann was elected director of Intergovernmental Committee of European Migration; Senator Kennedy sought to study the McCarren-Walter Act, while Walter fought to prevent any changes that president Eisenhower had put forth; Walter introduced a bill to put federal judges above 70 to lower positions in retaliation of a criticisim but was denounced by other federal judges; Public opions favors in loosening restrictionon McCarren-Walter Act; Appeals court ruled having a U.S passport was a right; Walter opposed new immigration studies; Change proposed to base quotas off immigrants ability to assimilate; Revisions regarding child citizenship; Pictures of Walter in a state department meeting; HUAC planned to probe those associated with the immigrant deportation delays; Walter sought to move displaced Jews into Israel; Picture of Walter in Israel; Walter goes to Italy to discuss immigration of Italians; Walter refused to give passports to diplomats who worked under the U.S.S.R; The state department refused to grant Greeks refugee applications; McCarran-Walter act set precendent that to be naturalized you don't have to take the oath; Foreign scientists were given easier access to visas but it was still a trickle compared to what they need; The American bar association set up a non profit research group to research passport issuance, though many opposed because there internal conflicts; New member additions to the UN caused a power balance, partially taking away some of the USA's power; Walter opposed any bill that would expand the refugee act; Walter urged Australia to take in Asian immigrants; Walter threatens to take away citizenship of actress who married a foreign prince; walter refused new immigration policies due to fear of less people speaking english and too many immigrants not assimilating; New passport policy included required fingerprinting upon gaining a passport/visa; political cartoon mocking Walter for seizing and limiting passports; Walter travelled to Austria to help remove tight restrictions on Hungarian refugees; Hungarian refugees cam to the USA in waves; Due to an emergency the USA made a special exception to expand quota to deal with the influx of Hungarian refugees; Political cartoon mocking Walter's McCarren-Walter plan, saying it's falling apart;
