4) “Royal Circus” Provenance: “The Microcosm of London”, R. Ackermann’s Repository of Arts (an illustrated British periodical published by Rudolph Ackermann). London. May 1, 1809. Drawn and engraved by Thomas Rowlandson and Augustus C. Pugin. Illustration of the Royal Circus and Equestrian Philharmonic Academy, established in 1782, which was renamed the Surrey Theatre in 1809. Shows one of the many circuses to provide entertainment to the people of London. From “The Microcosms of London,” a series of views with figures drawn by caricaturist T. Rowlandson and buildings by architectural draftsman A.C. Pugin.
