Tailing Stacks.
Item — Box: 0230, Item: 31
Scope and Contents
The tailings from the washing machines is conveyed by large mud skips to the top of a high trestle, where it is dumped, gradually forming huge piles, which are as much a feature of the scenery around Kimberly as are the Culm piles in the Anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania. (Presumably this reference comes from A. F.Brigham who worked in the Pennsylvania anthracite coal fields following his graduation from Lehigh (1894) in mining engineering. In 1901 he became a colleague of Cecil Rhodes and entered the South African diamond mining industry)
