Virginia (Eastern Part, Including West Virginia) at the time of the ratification of the CONSTITUTION, from original 1787 and 1775 maps in the Library of Congress at Washington, one made by Thomas Jefferson, the other by his father. Issued by the United States Constitution Sesqui- centennial Commission (heading). (three insets): A Map of the country between ALBEMARLE SOUND and LAKE ERIE, comprehending the whole of VIRGINIA, MARYLAND, DELAWARE and PENNSYLVANIA with parts of several other of the United States of America. Engraved for the Notes on Virginia. The country on the eastern side of the Alleghany Mountains is taken from Fry and Jefferson's map of Virginia, and Scull's Map of Pennsylvania, which were constructed chiefly on actual survey; that on the western side of the Alleghany, is taken from Hutchins, who went over the principal water courses, with a compass and log line correcting his work by observations of latitude: additions have been made, where they could be made on sure ground; 2d inset: Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia outlined in green among surrounding states with explanation how the other states were formed; 3rd inset: A Map of the most inhabited part of VIRGINIA contained the whole Province of MARYLAND with Part of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and North Carolina Drawn by Joshua Fry & Peter Jefferson in 1773. (Jefferson quote) "I do not propose that my name shall appear on the map, because I do not wish to place myself at the bar of the public. Paris Feb. 16. 1786 Thos. Jefferson" (small map of Virginia).
