Scope and Contents

Mine Inspection Trip Summer of 1922 by R.G. Pfahler, E.M. '23. This is a report submitted by Mr. Pfahler to the Mining Engineering Department as a thesis. The report covers what was seen by the Summer Mining Trip party at different mining and industrial plants and operations visited. The party included 39 men including professors Bartlett, Eckfeldt and Fretz. Participants names are listed in SC Photo 0015 record titled “The Lehigh University Summer Inspection Tour 1922.” The pioneering field trip participants left Lehigh University July 7, 1922 and returned to Bethlehem August 10 in most cases camping along the way. The inspection trip was the first of its kind ever attempted by any college. Mr. Pfahler credits the three professors for making the trip possible. The itinerary included: Delaware Water Gap and the Lackawanna Viaduct, anthracite coal mining, Watkins Glen, Corning glass manufacturing, Retsof Salt Mining Col, Kerr Salt Co. at Piffard, New York, Niagara Falls Power Co., Carborundum Co., Toronto University Ontario, Canada on to North Bay, Ontario to see Nipissing Mines at Timmins, Hollinger Gold Mines, silver mining in Ontario, Creighton Mine and Worthington Mine of the Mond Nickel Co., Kenyon Copper Co., Bruce Mines, Michigan’s Sault Ste. Marie Canal and Locks, Marquette Iron district, Pioneer Iron Co., Michigan School of Mines, Presque Isle and the Cleveland Cliff Iron Co. in Negaunee and Ishpeming, Champion Copper Co., Quincy Copper Co., Calumet and Hecla Co. mills in Michigan on to University of Illinois, Ohio, West Virginia bituminous coal mining, lead and zinc mines, Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, to Cornwall Iron Mines at Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The report include numerous drawings, maps and photographs to illustrate the narrative comprising 53 pages and several inserts describing how the trip of 3000 miles was accomplished by camping with six automobiles and one truck to carry the tents and camping gear. Three credits were earned by the students participating. The primary interest of the field trip was for mining students. There are 8 inserts comprising newspaper articles, route maps, various mine blueprints and drawings: Blue Print showing trip as proposed by Prof. R. L. Bartlett, Rail Road Map showing Route taken thru Canada, Flow Sheet of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd. Mill, Calumet Conglomerate Flow Sheet Smelting & Electrolytic Plant, Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. Flow Sheet, Flow Sheet of Low Grade Mill, High Grade Mill and Refinery at Nipissing Mining Co. Ltd. Cobalt Ontario and two newspaper articles, map of territory traveled, outline of Summer 1922 & 1924 Automobile Inspection Tour of Mining Districts of Northeastern United States and Ontario, Canada conducted by the Department of Mining Engineering Lehigh University. Scrapbook measures 25 x 21 x 2 cm black buckram binding with pocket in back cover, 53 pages, 46 black and white photographs measuring 5 x 7 cm, 5 black and white measuring 7.5 x 13 cm and one black and white photograph measuring 13 x 7.5 cm.
