Scope and Contents

Report on Summer Inspection Trip 1924 by George A. Howland, Ch.E. '25 submitted Dec. 18, 1924. This report details the personal adventures of 32 students and professors in six cars on the second summer inspection trip conducted by the Mining Engineering Department of Lehigh University. Car #1 was a Cadillac belonging to Professor R. A. Bartlett of the Mining Department, cars #2 and #3 were Hudson Supersixes, cars #4 and #5 Buicks and # 6 was Professor Eckfeldt’s Hudson. The cars had brown oilcloth banners “Lehigh Mine Inspection Tour, etc.” They left Bethlehem August 2 and returned September 5, 1924. Again the group camped out in public camping grounds. First notable stop was Watkins Glen camping on Keuka Lake and toured the International Salt Company Retsof Mines spending time underground. Noted the countryside was heavily glaciated. Looked at Niagara Falls and visited sites of engineering importance: Shredded Wheat Company plant, powerhouses and an aluminum company, Harry Egolf found an excellent sample of a fossil formation of Niagara line at foot of Bald Falls near Jordan on way to Toronto visiting University of Toronto. After a week on the road started for North Bay camping at Lake Nipissing took the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railroad to Cobalt to visit the Nipissing Mining Company’s silver ore seam noting the country is of volcanic origin; took Train to Timmons to visit a rural mining camp to see the Hollinger mine, some members visited an asbestos mine and others visited geologic site of glacial drift. Left area and traveled westward to inspect smelter of Mond Nickel Company at Sudbury and International Nickel Company going down to 24th level. Made trip to Sault Ste. Marie and St. Mary’s River viewed the locks and power plant of the Union Carbide Company. Ass’t Prof. Parke Fraim EM’09 cooked for the gang. On to Marquette, Michigan to inspect ore docks, Negaunee Shaft and mine, Holmes mine of the Cleveland Cliff mining company, to Houghton, Michigan. See copper mine at the Champion Mine, Quincy hoisting engine and smelter, visit Calumet & Hecla company. Travel to Oshkosh, Wisconsin via Iron Mountain on to Chicago Heights, to Ohio, Wheeling, West Virginia on to Pittsburgh and eastward to Bethlehem. The resume of the Mining Trip was published which includes the names of the alumni accompanying the students: Professor Howard Eckfeldt ’96, Professor R. L. Bartlett, Professor Parke B. Fraim ‘09, Professor A. Copeland Callen ‘09. This reports has four colored lithograph postcard folders, 24 thumbnail black and white photos, 45 postcards and 20 black and white photographs measuring 5.5 x 8.5 cm glued to 27 pages in scrapbook measuring 25 x 21 x 1.5 cm with black buckram binding.
