Biographical / Historical
Lehigh Valley Rail Road Company was founded in 1846. Lehigh University’s founder Asa Packer became the president in 1852 until his death in 1879. Under his management, LVRR expanded its web of railways Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. In 1897, it was controlled by J.P. Morgan. LVRR played major role in supplying anthracite, iron and steel from the Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania to the industrial centers, such as Buffalo, New York City and Philadelphia. LVRR was also an important passenger carrier in the same region. Its famous train was known as the Black Diamond Express.
In 1962, it went under the control of Pennsylvania Rail Road, and in 1976 Conrail took over all the operations of LVRR.
