Lectures by Charles Russ Richards on iron and metallurgy
Scope and Contents
The book is a lithographic copy of lecture notes attributed to Charles Russ Richards. Included with this book are two original letters describing the gift of the Richards lecture note book along with another book of photographs of Lehigh University during the Richards presidency which also had a note from Andrew Carnegie on his visit to Lehigh on April 28, 1908. There are photocopies of the original copies of the two letters still with the Richards book.

Biographical / Historical
Charles Russ Richards (1871-1941) graduated 1890 from Purdue University at the age of nineteen with a bachelor of mechanical engineering and in 1891 a masters of engineering. In 1895 he earned a Master of Mechanical Engineering degree from Cornell University. From 1893 to 1911 he was a professor at the University of Nebraska. He was invited to University of Illinois in 1911 as a professor of mechanical engineering and six years later became director after supervising the building of Illinois’ engineering experiment station. From 1913-15 and 1917-22 he was dean of the University of Illinois College of Engineering specifically in mechanical engineering. In 1922 he became President of Lehigh University, and retired in 1935 due to poor health.

Abstract
This manuscript contains the notes for 20 Lectures attributed to Charles Russ Richards (1871-1941), Lehigh University President 1922-1935, possibly written during his early career as a professor at the University of Nebraska (1893-1911). The lecture notes present a fascinating insight into the intricate iron making process at the end of the Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries providing comparisons of the various methods and countries processing iron.
