Biographical / Historical
Richmond Township was created in 1740 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. It was an agrarian society with many rich farms, mills, country stores and churches. One of the names noted on some documents is Moselem Springs a name applied not only to a mill but a local Evangelical Lutheran Church as well. Maxatawny Township’s largest town is Kutztown the location of the Keystone State Normal college. Among the names of Richmon Township land owners recorded on the deeds are: Leibelsperger, Kauffman/Kaufmann, Hunter, Schwoyer, Graff/Graeff, Rothermel, Hoch – all still prominent family names in Berks County.
