Scope and Contents
The collection is made up of a series of personal correspondences and geological surveys, papers from his trip to South America, his writing and speeches, scrapbook pages, papers from his trip to Europe and Asia, diaries, and his diplomas. The typescripts of his trip were originally unnumbered, and have since been renumbered twice, the most accurate being those in the center of the page.

Biographical / Historical
Born in 1874, Miller was Head of the Geology Dept. at Lehigh University from 1907-1944, having earned his A.B. from the University of Kansas and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins. Before coming to Lehigh he taught at Penn College and Bryn Mawr, and briefly at Princeton. In 1942 he was selected as Chairman of the Industrial Minerals Division of the A.I.M.E. He travelled extensively during his life to places such as China, Japan, Europe, Central and South America, and Alaska. His trip to South America was followed by his publication of The Mineral Deposits of South America in 1919.

The collection includes correspondence to (and carbons of replies from) Prof. Miller, and also includes mounted newspaper clippings, diaries and photographs of his South American trip in 1915 and diaries of his trip around the world in 1937, plus his daily personal diaries from 1891 to 1913 and from 1929 until his death in 1944.
