Biographical / Historical
Henry S. Drinker was born in 1850. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1871 with a degree in Mining Engineering. He helped building the two-mile-long Musconetcong Tunnel in New Jersey. Later he became a lawyer and worked for Lehigh Valley Rail Road Company as the chief attorney until 1905 when he became the president of Lehigh University. Drinker’s acceptance of the position at Lehigh University was praised highly by the newspapers. Drinker’s sister-in-law Cecilia Beaux collected some newspaper clippings and sent them to President Roosevelt along with a letter which is archived in the National Archives. Lehigh University owns President Roosevelt’s reply as praising Drinker’s action as a “good deed”.
