Biographical / Historical

Thornburg received a Bachelor of Arts degree, Bachelor of Science, and a chemical engineering degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Thornburg was Foreign Industrial Consultant for Twentieth Century Fund, NY.

The typescript came with Charles R. Wylie's donation of books, magazines, and documents related to Turkey and its history.

Vacuum Oil Company was founded in 1866 in New York State Vacuum Oil Co. merged with Standard Oil Co of New York, 1879, commonly known as Socony Oil to form the Socony-Vacuum Oil Company. The Mobil trademark,1899.

Standard Oil was broken up in 1911 due to the Sherman Antitrust Act, Vacuum became an independent company. Vacuum Oil and Standard Oil of New York merged in 1931, as Socony-Vacuum Corp. In 1955, the company became Socony Mobil Oil Company. In 1963 it was renamed Mobilgas then just Mobil. Exxon Mobil Corp. was formed in 1999 by the merger of Exxon and Mobil.

Abstract

This is the typescript first draft of Max Weston Thornburg's later book, Turkey, an Economical Appraisal. The letter/memorandum accompanying the draft indicates that Thornburg sent this first draft from Persian Gulf to Socony Oil Company's Board Director H. F. Sheets for his review. Mr. Sheets, note on the letter, passed the draft on Charles R. Wylie who was Socony Oil Company's Turkey representative for his opinion.
