Biographical / Historical
Barbara Rea Pearson was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1946 to father Samuel A. Rea and mother, Eleanor Appel. The family moved to Ft. Wayne, Indiana, where she was raised along with her siblings. In the summer, the family would visit Leland, Michigan, where Pearson discovered her passion for dancing and the arts. Pearson would later go to college at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. During her Junior year at Carleton, Pearson studied abroad at Sorbonne University in Paris, where she further developed her passion for the arts by exploring the French language and culture. Pearson later attended Wesleyan University, located in Middletown, Connecticut, where she obtained her Masters of Liberal Arts.
Pearson moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in the early 1970s when her first husband, John Haskew Pearson, was given the head of the drama department here at Lehigh University in the early ’70s. After her husband died, Pearson decided to remain in historic downtown Bethlehem for the rest of her life. In the years after her husbands’ death, Pearson agreed to open up The People’s Theater Company in Bethlehem with some of her late husbands’ students. Some of Pearson’s other notable achievements include being a featured performer at Musikfest in the early years. Serving as an Arts-in-education consultant in schools around the country, she created the Renaissance Pageant at Lehigh University’s Packer Memorial Church; She founded Capriole School of Dance and Movement. She was also the founding director of The Arts in Education Coalition of the Lehigh Valley Arts Council. Pearson sadly passed away after suffering from cancer in 2018. However, she made a lasting impact on the Lehigh Valley Arts environment that the community will remember.
