Biographical / Historical
Lawrence Henry Gipson was born in 1880, graduated from the University of Idaho in 1903, was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford from 1904 to 1907, and received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1918. He became head of the Department of History and Government at Lehigh University in 1924, retiring as Emeritus in 1952. He published his 15 volume History of the British Empire before the American Revolution between 1936 and 1970. He died in 1971, at the age of 90.
He left his entire estate, including his personal and professional papers to Lehigh, which established the Lawrence Henry Gipson Institute for Eighteenth-Century Studies in his name.
