Biographical / Historical
Established in 1866, the Lehigh University Chemistry Department was a founding pillar of the institution, initially led by the distinguished chemist Charles M. Wetherill. During its first century, the department focused on supporting the Lehigh Valley’s industries, specializing in analytical and metallurgical chemistry. The 1884 opening of the Chandler-Ullmann Laboratory —now a National Historic Chemical Landmark—solidified Lehigh’s reputation as a premier site for chemical education.
Following World War II, the department transitioned from an instructional focus to a research-intensive hub, notably pioneering the fields of surface and colloid chemistry. The establishment of the Center for Surface and Coating Research in 1959 and the opening of the Seeley G. Mudd Building in 1975 marked a shift toward high-tech material science. Today, the department emphasizes interdisciplinary innovation, particularly in biochemistry, nanotechnology, and molecular engineering, maintaining its legacy as a cornerstone of Lehigh’s scientific research.
