The material in this collection is diverse assortment of Lehigh related memorabilia and the owner’s pride in his Lehigh connection: class notes, ceramic drinking utensils, glassware, jewelry [two pairs of cuff links, tie bar, tie tack, ring], felt pennants, poster.

Biographical / Historical
Henry Sparks Pickands was born July 29, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio but his family resided in Gates Mills, Ohio. His father was Henry Sparks “Hank” Pickands, Sr. (1909-1986) a Lehigh Alumni from Class of 1932. He entered Lehigh in September 1957 in the Class of 1961 and resided in Drinker Hall Room 221 with room mate Russell Jack Seel also from Ohio. Some of Mr. Seel’s papers are included in this collection. Mr. Pickands was entered originally into Mechanical Engineering, transferred to Electrical Engineering but eventually finished in Business Administration as he received a B. S. in Business Administration. According to the Lehigh Alumni Directory he was a Sales Representative for Univ. Business Equipment Supply in Ashtabula, Ohio. He requested a transcript of record from Lehigh’s Registrar Office January 24, 1962 which indicates the business administration degree as do some of his class notes. Apparently, he was in the Air Force R.O.T.C. for the first two years at Lehigh. He served as manager for the 1960-61 Rifle Team. He died 2020/21. Mr. Pickands came from a long line of men named Henry Sparks Pickands:
1834-1901 was born in Wilmington, Delaware but family [father James Dinsmore Pickands, mother Louisa] moved to Ohio eventually settling in Cleveland. Before Civil War he worked as a cabinet maker when he enlisted in the Ohio Infantry and saw action throughout the war attaining the rank of Major. At end of war was in Michigan’s Lake Superior area and worked as manager of Munising and Bay Furnaces making charcoal pig iron and remained in this business. He supervised construction of Spring Lake Iron Company’s blast furnaces in 1879 and became its general manager. He married Marion Louise Welch in 1878. In 1884 he had a ship named for him H. S. Pickands, a bulk freighter operated by Michigan- Bangor Furnace Co. out of Grand Haven, Michigan. He died in Chicago, Illinois.
1875-1929 born in Marquette, Michigan - parents James (1839-1896) and Caroline Martha Outhwaite (1839-1896) Pickands. He graduated in 1897 from Yale’s Sheffield Scientific School. He married Jeanne /Jean Kennedy and they had six children. He was affiliated with the ore firm Pickands, Mather & Co. This company was started in 1883, is a chief supplier of raw materials to the steel industry and in 1920s had second largest fleet on the Great Lakes as well as an iron mining company. Died in Cleveland, Ohio.
1909-1986 “Hank” Lehigh Class of 1932 was born to Henry Sparks and Jeanne Kennedy Pickands in Marquette, Michigan. He married Yetive Louise Sheets and had one child. He died in Florida.
1939-2020/21 Lehigh Class of 1961. His father was “Hank” of Lehigh Class of 1932. He was a Sales Representative for Univ. Business Equipment Supplies of Ashtabula, Ohio.
