Biographical / Historical
Paul Salerni is an American composer, conductor, and educator who served on the faculty of Lehigh University for 45 years. A graduate of Amherst College and Harvard University (Ph.D. in composition), Salerni held the position of NEH Distinguished Chair in the Humanities and Professor of Music. His compositions, spanning opera, orchestral, chamber, and vocal music, have been performed nationally and internationally. Notable works include Tony Caruso’s Final Broadcast, which won the National Opera Association’s Chamber Opera competition. At Lehigh, Salerni directed ensembles, taught music theory and composition, and led international music study programs. He retired in 2023 but stayed as the department chair until May 2025.
