Magician's Journal
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a binder owned by the semi-professional magician, Richard Fuehrer, as well as two of his business cards. In the first section, labeled “patter bits”, he outlined jokes to tell the audience during his show, as well as other ways to foster participation. Although the binder does not contain extensive explanations for how to do tricks, he describes some in the next section labeled as “miscellaneous.” This section also contains meaning of code words. The “previous engagements” section provides summaries of every show, such as which tricks were used and the audiences’ responses. There is also an advertising section. Under an unlabeled tab, he calculated the prices of the props which he used in his tricks. In the final section, labeled as “program building,” he listed the tricks in the order which he was going to use them in shows.
The collection also includes two of Fuehrer’s business cards, one which includes a crossword puzzle on the back.

Biographical / Historical
Richard Clarence Fuehrer (1927-2022) was a semi-professional magician and Lehigh alumnus. Born in Swansea, MA, he graduated from Lehigh in 1949. While at Lehigh, he was a member of Mustard and Cheese and worked at the Brown and White. He held magic shows at Lehigh events, performances which the newspaper referred to as “amazing feats of magic, which have long been renowned in this section of the country.” After graduation, he went on to become a media director in the advertising industry in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Fuehrer began practicing magic in at least 1943 when the notebook begins, before he began at Lehigh, and continued until 1951, after his graduation, when the journal ends.
