Scope and Content Note

The collection of pamphlets, journal reprints, newspaper clippings and correspondence are inserted more or less in chronological order in two topics covering the wool and textile industry and weights and measures of wool. There is a Lehigh University Library gift plate acknowledging the donor as The Carded Woolen Manufactures Association Boston, Mass. A red bordered label stipulates “Accepted as a gift with the provision that it shall not circulate outside the building.” The title page and contents index are typed, as well as correspondence from assorted people including W. C. Hunneman, Director of The Carded Woolen Manufacturers Association, to Howard S. Leach, Librarian of Lehigh University; typed letters from Edward Moir, President of The Carded Woolen Manufacturers Association to T. H. Caraway in the U.S. Senate and other U.S. Congress members and a handwritten letter from Samuel S. Dale to Howard S. Leach. Part 1 deals with Wool Tariff and Wool Labeling has 173 pamphlets, newspaper articles and correspondence from various sources with numbers from 1 to 416; Part 2 deals with Weights and Measures contains 62 pamphlets and newspaper articles from various sources with numbers ranging from 504 to 608. Each item has the consecutive hand written bold black ink number in the upper right corner but some numbers are missing in the sequence. The numbering of the items is a puzzle. The sequence numbering according to the Index is consecutive with some missing numbers which is reflected within the binding. On page 4 of the Contents index at the lower left is typed Book No. 53 which indicates this book’s position in a total issue of 101 books distributed by the Carded Woolen Manufacturers Association.

Biographical Note

Samuel Sherman Dale, the creator of this collection, was editor of the Textile World Record (publisher Lord and Nagle). Dale worked for the purpose of securing wise legislation affecting the production of wool, a tariff on wool based on the value of goods and the manufacture of dyes and duty on dye stuffs. Apparently he was an expert, writer, and book collector on tariffs, textiles, and weights and measures. He was a worker and a superintendent in the woolen and worsted mills industry. He was born in 1859 and alive at least until the mid 1930s.

Abstract

This collection is a compilation of material presenting a case for a fair tariff on wool based on value of goods, the manufacture of dyes and duty on dye stuff, labeling, weights and measures. The collector of this collection of pamphlets, newspaper articles and correspondence, Samuel S. Dale, produced this work for the purpose of securing wise legislation affecting the production of wool.

Arrangement of the Collection

Each part and supplement is arranged in a separate chronology. There are four acknowledged sections: Part 1 Written for the purpose of securing wise legislation affecting the production and distribution of wool and wool goods. 1 – 125. Wool Tariff 201-220. Wool Labeling 301-325. Textile Miscellany with Supplement 402 – 416. Wool and Textile Miscellany by Various writers. Part 2 Written for the purpose of promoting the wise regulation of our weights and measures. 504 – 560. Weights and Measures with Supplement 601 – 606. Weights and Measures.

Acquisition Information

The Carded Woolen Manufacturers Association presented this book January 11, 1929 to Lehigh University. The book was accessioned into the Library June 6, 1929 with number 138332 according to the purple library stamp and cataloged as S 337 D13w and at some point in time the stamp Storage was added.
