After work was abandoned in the Open Mine, due to falls of Reef, a number of years elapsed before the mine was taken over by De Beers and systematic under-ground work commenced. In the meantime the open pit gradually filled with water. This water reached a depth of 150’. Before underground work could be commenced, this water had to be pumped out.
