These letters give a brief glimpse into the mining business in the early Nineteenth Century. Alexander McIntyre to whom these letters are addressed was an ambitious entrepreneur in the coal and iron country of New York and Pennsylvania with his name being passed on to many sites in these states.

The collection contains approximately 384 documents (deeds, titles, indentures, correspondence and leases) for anthracite coal lands, 40 envelopes, 20 maps, two pamphlets, one photogravure, and one large colored "painting." John Reid, the acknowledged photographer of this picture, was in his lifetime known as a pioneer photographer of the “Iron Horse” (steam locomotives). He introduced the convention of taking the photographs “from a position just ahead of the smoke box” in the late 1850s.
