Abstract A unique record of soldiers of German origin who served the “United States” in the Continental Army under the command of Lt. Col. Ludwig Weltner from Frederick, Maryland as opposed to the German troops who served in the British Army. In May 1776 the Second Continental Congress established the Eighth Maryland Regiment, more popularly known as the German Regiment or German Battalion as an infantry unit.
