Archibald McIntyre Correspondence

Abstract

These letters give a brief glimpse into the mining business in the early Nineteenth Century. Alexander McIntyre to whom these letters are addressed was an ambitious entrepreneur in the coal and iron country of New York and Pennsylvania with his name being passed on to many sites in these states.

Scope and Contents The collection contains approximately 384 documents (deeds, titles, indentures, correspondence and leases) for anthracite coal lands, 40 envelopes, 20 maps, two pamphlets, one photogravure, and one large colored "painting." Abstract

A documentation of court history of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, infamously known as the site of the activities of the Molly Maguires, a secret society primarily of Irish miners who riot against anthracite coalmine owners in the mid-1800s. Although the time frame of this court history was before the real "crime wave" that appeared in the anthracite mine area, it is indicative of the labor unrest prevailing throughout the citizenry in the Pennsylvania coalfields.
