George Shortess Artists' Books Collection

Abstract

This collection comprises artists’ books, exhibition catalogs, and literary fiction dating from the 1970s to the 1990s. It reflects a wide range of conceptual approaches to the book as a medium of artistic expression. The materials challenge conventional formats and explore experimental narrative, structure, and design. The collection was assembled by George Shortess—psychologist, professor, and artist—whose own artist books are also included.

Girdler Family Records

Abstract An extensive collection of correspondence, information and genealogical searches made by current family members to trace ancestors into the Seventeenth Century when it is believed the first of the Girdlers came to the American colonies. The early ancestors settled in Marblehead, Essex County, Massachusetts and were involved in the mariner trade as sailors, masters and captains of merchant ships. Gold Discoveries Scrapbook 1848-1852

A fascinating collection of nineteenth century published information about gold discoveries, mining, economical influence and transportation around the world. Anything anyone wanted or needed to know about gold is included in the newspaper articles glued to the pages of the scrapbook. Whoever took the time to collect the information had a very serious intent or need to know about gold.

Hardware Scrapbook

Abstract

There is a two-fold interest in this item. The actual hardware illustrated within the catalogue that was utilized as a scrapbook for some Lehigh University newspaper articles appearing in many newspapers between 1907 to 1912. The hardware illustrated in the book is now of considerable interest to antique restoration. Much of the hardware reflects the Eastlake and Art Nouveau architectural styles. The newspaper articles feature many interesting features of Lehigh’s history.
