A selective collection of newspaper
caricatures, cartoons, sketches and portraits of the Beecher family especially related
to the scandalous adultery trial in 1875 involving the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher and
Mrs. Elizabeth Tilton. Beecher was the younger brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author
of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The entire Beecher family was involved in the abolition cause.
The collection contained in this bound volume is an interesting insight into the public

Overview
This account book is an interesting
observation into 19th century social services or attitudes. The notations in the little
account book indicate that Elijah D. Tompkins had the title of “Overseer of the Poor.”
The entries seem to have been made by an officer of the local government whose job was
to deal with the diverse problems of a New Jersey township believed to be Hanover Township.
Many entries are made regarding dealing with the indigent and the 19th century attitudes
toward the poor. ...

This scrapbook is an interesting contrast of nineteenth
century ephemera – albumen photographs and chromolithographic trade cards and calling/visiting cards. The
photographs present the metal truss design of bridges built by the King Iron Bridge Company in various places
in the 1880s. The trade cards promoting patent medicines and perfume and the calling cards display the
beautiful art of the chromolithograph printing process. The scrapbook seems to represent a popular Victorian
Era family...
