Benjamin Lightfoot Survey Notebook

Abstract

This manuscript notebook includes survey data of a road to be built between Pottsville to Shamokin (then an Indian Territory) in 18th century. It also contains detailed information on surveyor’s measurements and coordinates; descriptions of the terrain, and insight into frontier Pennsylvania and the interaction between the English settlers, militias and the native people on the Schuylkill and Susquehanna rivers of colonial Pennsylvania.

Abstract

Album contains small black and white photographs of mid-Twentieth Century railroad related images, specifically the Erie Railroad. The Erie Railroad system served the Northeastern United States connecting New York City on the Hudson River to Lake Erie. The collection contains images of the 1943 floods on the Delaware River and other tributaries.

Scope and Contents The collection contains estimates, proposals and designs for bridge projects in 19 New York towns, mostly in the vicinity of Syracuse, New York. The two folio volumes [one large, one smaller] are engineer’s bridge design notebooks most likely compiled in Syracuse, New York, c. 1871-1884 where the Howard Soule Jr. had his association; they consist of pencil sketches, entry notes and calculations with illustrations, estimates and costs. Abstract The album contains a collection of photographs of six Pennsylvania bridges and several railroad works possibly inspected by G. W. Philips in a period from 1900 to 1930.
