Abstract
An extensive collection of correspondence, information and genealogical searches made by current family members to trace ancestors into the Seventeenth Century when it is believed the first of the Girdlers came to the American colonies. The early ancestors settled in Marblehead, Essex County, Massachusetts and were involved in the mariner trade as sailors, masters and captains of merchant ships. Abstract
An interesting document describing a young man’s apprenticeship at sea learning the seaman’s trade and passing his free time writing poetry and songs to entertain his ship board companions. The date of this logbook is the late eighteenth century describes the early American whaling trade out of New Bedford, Massachusetts later forever immortalized in Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick.”
