Arthur Cayley Letters to Robert Harley, 1859-1863

Abstract

This collection contains letters written from London by Cayley to Rev. Robert Harley between 24 September 1859 and 5 February 1863. Many of these letters deal with details of invariant-theoretic calculations that Cayley and Harley performed. Harley's name does not appear in any of these letters and his identity has been deduced from internal evidence.

Mathematik Notes 1858 - 1859

Abstract

This nineteenth century manuscript is another item from the Eckley B. Coxe Technical Library. The notebook is written in Old German and deals with the topic of mathematical calculations useful for mining engineering specifically with the use of a sextant as a mine surveying instrument. The notes are from lectures given by a Professor Dr. A. Junge at Freiberg School of Mines in the academic year 1858/59.

Ralph VanArnam Correspondence Collection

Abstract

The majority of the collection is comprised of letters from Ralph VanArnam Lewis (1902-1977), the bulk of which were sent between 1920 and 1955. Ralph had been a professor in the d Mathematics and Astronomy Department from 1928 to 1967. Most of the letters are between Ralph and his parents and his future wife on topics like the Bethlehem area and Lehigh. The collection also includes letters written by his brother, Lewis.
