Abstract

Collection composed primarily of Alphonse Taride maps for regions of France circa 1920s and a few other vintage maps: Brentano's British Isles, Rand McNally's New England: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Canadian Maritime Provinces and Germany's Schwartzwald region. The maps reflect the era of the establishment of the automobile as a cultural symbol of freedom of the road and travel between the two World Wars.

Scope and Contents The Lehigh collection is composed of 35 individual antique maps of different sizes. Twenty-seven maps indicate that they were manufactured by Johann Georg Schreiber, three maps indicate their manufacture was supervised by his widow and five maps are attributed to Johann Christ. Schreiber. The paper is heavy laid paper. The maps have never been bound. The maps measure approximately 17 x 26.5 cm and the overall sheets measures 24 x 32 cm. Abstract

Four scrapbooks containing miscellaneous newspaper clippings, correspondence. Each volume individually indexed. The materials in the scrapbooks are not arranged chronologically throughout: Vol. 1 1891-1937; Vol 2 1919-1937; Vol. 3 1916-1937, Vol. 4 1889-1939. William C. Bowie's career in scientific research in the theory of isostasy and its application to dynamics and structural geology is reflected in these scrapbooks.
