November 1930 correspondence 1930 November Letterhead of The Royal Empire Society outlining their monthy Program of activities among which is a discussion on “Native Policy in East Africa” by Mr. A.A. Menkin (Tanganyika) and Mr. W. MacLellan Wilson (Kenya). Enclosed in Debenham 1 November 1930 letter) 1930 November 1 from Herbert Debenham (Antwerp) to Beamish (Handwritten letter introducing Beamish to Pierre Jaspar with name card as he has African experience. On reverse is handwritten Beamish note saying he didn’t want this introduction to Belgian Prime minister’s son and passed it off to Serra to deal with it. Beamish says that the Belgians are fighting for supremacy of all white races. This letter attached with front of an envelope from Comite Permanent du Congres Colonial National and a penciled note dated Nov. 9, 1930 “I met many of these people & they are all very naturally interested in Native Paramountcy.) 1930 November 1 from T.W.Williamson (Sinoia, S. Rhodesia) to Beamish (five page handwritten letter saying that Lord Delamere leaves for Genoa and the recent white paper has succeeded in rousing the European opinion in Africa on the question of Native Paramountcy. Williamson reports on the game some of the British are playing such as Col. Johnson and Edmonds. Beamish notes he received this letter Nov. 24) 1930 November 1 (newspaper article by William M. Capetown. South African Church Office, Church House, Westminster refers to “paramount” in the White Paper on East African affairs.) Scanned 1930 November 4 (newspaper article titled “The Imperial Conference – General Hertzog on Its Value – Prince George and South Africa” relates a dinner given to honor General Hertzog.) Scanned by 1930 November 5 from Kenya Products (Antwerp) to Beamish (typed letter on Kenya Products letterhead reports on finding Beamish’s suitcase and redirecting it and reports the cost of doing so. In red crayon “Tear Up” Recd Nov 6/30. In pencil: Peel Anglo Rho Tob(acco ?) 1930 November 5 (newspaper article from The Daily Mail “Menace of a Racial Conflict in Africa. The Native Peril. Evil of “Paramountcy.” Killing White Settlement.” By a Special Correspondent. Relates a warning by General Hertzog.) 1930 November 7 from Kenya Products (Antwerp) to Williams (typed letter reporting on seeing people in Brussels who have interests in Belgian Congo and thereby the Native Policy situation 1930 November 7 from Beamish (London) to (P.B.) Williams (typed letter reports on a series of meetings with the East Africa Board being postponed because Delamere was not prepared, later a meeting at the AntiSlavery office and the Royal Colonial Institute. Beamish relates that his brother (Rr. Adm.T.P.H. Beamish) also met with Baldwin (Stanley) and lobbied the Paramountcy question in the House of Commons and talked with Snell). 1930 November 8 from A. H. Lane (Campden Hill) to De la Mothe (handwritten note inviting De la Mothe to visit him. Col. Lane is author of “The Alien Menace.”) 1930 November 8 from Jerome De la Mothe (Russell Square, London) to Colonel Lane (handwritten note says Beamish arrived back from the continent with a fever, really did wonderful work with the Belgians and Portuguese people but is busy. De la Mothe indicates he will try to accept the invitation.) 1930 November 8 from H.H. Beamish (London) to Williams (typed letter says that he and De la Mothe met with Delamere, interested in help to put out of action “this cursed Native Paramountcy White Paper.” Mentions General Hertzog and Sir Abe Bailey and lobbying the House of Commons, seeing Snell and discussing the matter “Empire Parliamentary Assoc.”, “Imperial Affairs Committee” and the “1922 Committee.” 1930 November 9 Flyer from Whitefield’s Institutional Church Address by Mr. H.W. Nevinson On his exposure of Slavery in Central Africa outlined in blue crayon. Two inked notes from Beamish saying “continuous propaganda is required to combat this sort of thing.” “I attended this meeting & dealt with it.” This was attached to Debenham letter.) 1930 November 13 from H.H. Beamish (London) to Sinclair (typed letter saying he has written P. B. Williams and admonishing Sinclair for not writing to De la Mothe indicating how loyal and trustworthy De la Mothe is but is not getting any communication from Moshi. Hertzog is mentioned. Beamish indicates that he has impressed upon De la Mothe the necessity of sticking to the question of Native Paramountcy inspite of not hearing from his Moshi friends. Beamish says he is in close contact with Northern and Southern Rhodesia both are helpful. Col. Frank Johnson is on his way to London and Beamish indicates that his help can be relied on.) 1930 November 13 from H.H. Beamish (London) to P.B. Williams (Dar es Salaam) (typed letter indicating receipt of a resolution passed at Moshi at which Messrs Bown and Leed were present. The request is made that this Moshi group requested De la Mothe to go to London to represent them but the group is not giving support to De la Mothe. Mentioned is “getting the White Paper squashed” and pinning faith on General Hertzog regarding the Native Paramountcy. Beamish mentions lobbying Sir Robert Hamilton, who has reputation as a Negropholist but can be reasonable.) 1930 November 13 from Beamish (London) to Williams (typed letter: at top of Letter in black “Copy of letter from H H Beamish to Mr. P B Williams, Dar es Salaam.” In blue crayon COPY. Remainder of letter in blue carbon type of same message as previous letter) 1930 November 24 from De la Mothe (London) to H. Snell (House of Commons) (typed letter –COPY- sent by H.H. Beamish. Repy to letter on the address “The Native Question in East Africa” indicating that Kenya & Tanganyika have practically the same view point. Beamish adds Notes that Snell has said that Lansbury will probably chair the meeting. Beamish mentions that he had a meeting with the Prime Minister’s son, Malcolm Macdonald. Two copies of letter and envelope addressed to P. Sinclair P.O. Moshi Tanganyika) 1930 November 28 from H.H. Beamish (typed note –“ COPY- Meeting on Monday December 1 1930 at the Tea House, Northway, under the auspices of the Golders Green & Hampstead Garden Suburb branch of the Womens International League, at 3.p.m. Speakers: Mr. McGregor Ross on “The Claims of the Kenya Colonists” and Mrs. McGregor Ross on “The African Oman.” Note- de la Mothe & myself will be there. This anti-white propa- Ganda is going on continually & should be strenuously & consistently Combated. As no members of the “official” delegation are here we are Doing the necessary.” Signed in blue crayon H.H. Beamish) 1930 November 28 from H.H. Beamish to P.B. Williams (Dar es Salaam) (typed letter reports on the items in the weekly Tanganyika Standard of Nov. 1st which indicates that Beamish and Williams are styled as the “unofficial delegation.” He does not know if Messrs. Lead and Bown are coming over but expenses are so heavy to go on so De la Mothe is going to Canada. He mentions the McGregor Ross Meeting as not materializing and in McGregor’s place spoke Archdeacon Owens well known in Kenya for Views on the native questions and unfair criticism of Lord Delamere.
