Biographical / Historical
Charles Hoffman was born in the early 1900’s. He lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania and attended Allentown High School. He then enrolled to Lehigh University in 1934 and received a BS in electrical engineering in 1938. The documents showed that Hoffman was active on campus, involved in several honors societies and fraternities. He was president of the Ernest W. Brown Astronomical Society in 1935, and secretary in ‘36. He was also president of Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematic society, and of the Newtonian Society. He was a member of Phi Eta Sigma honors fraternity, Tau Beta Pi honors fraternity, Eta Kappa Nu honors electrical engineering fraternity, the Electrical Engineering Society and Theta Xi social fraternity. He received freshman and sophomore honors, the Wilbur Scholarship, and the Alumni Junior Engineering Prize.
After Lehigh, Hoffman attended MIT in 1939-1940 and received his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering. At MIT he was a member of Sigma Xi, scientific research society.
According to the Lehigh Alumni Directories, in 1947 he was Assistant Engineer at Public Service Electric & Gas Co. in Newark, NJ; in 1956 he was Senior Engineer. He lived in Sea Girt, NJ. In 1976 he was Senior Vice President of Energy Pooling Public Service Electric &Gas Co. He retired in the late 70’s/early 80’s. He was married to Louise W. They had children, Christopher, Jennifer, and Emily.
