Biographical / Historical

Henry S. Jacoby was born in Springtown, Bucks County, in April 1857, entered Lehigh University at the age of 15 in the preparatory department and graduated as a Civil Engineer in 1877. He received an Honorary Doctor of Engineering Degree from Lehigh in October 1941. He worked on the Mississippi River Survey for six years, became an instructor at Lehigh University for 4 years, then spent 32 years as a professor at Cornell University. His most famous book was Roofs and Bridges, in four volumes, written with Mansfield Merriman but he authored quite a number of civil engineering practical design books. He died August 1, 1955 and was buried in Nisky Hill Cemetery, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
