Biographical / Historical

(Obituary from The Morning Call, August 21, 2007) Charles R. Nippert Sr., 85, of Allentown, died on Saturday night, August 18, 2007. He was the husband of the late Eleanor Mae (Tyce-Cassel) Nippert, who died in 1990. He was the son of Raymond Nippert and Florence Bach Nippert of Allentown. He was a descendent of Jacob Nippert, a Civil War veteran and Karl Bach, one of the early potters of Allentown. He was born July 18, 1922 and graduated from Allentown High School in 1939. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1947, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He joined Bethlehem Steel Corp. in 1940 as a machinist and worked there for more than 30 years, rising to the rank of consulting engineer in the engineering division. He was a licensed professional engineer and a member of the American Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. While at Bethlehem Steel, he worked on many special projects, earning five patents for various inventions related to steel production before retiring in 1978. Charles also taught engineering courses at the Penn State Extension, Allentown. He was active in several community organizations. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for many years. In the early 1960s, he became a member of Jordan Masonic Lodge 673, becoming a 32nd degree Mason and was a Stewart in Lehigh Consistory. He was also active in the Pennsylvania German Society. After his son, Tommy, was born with Downs Syndrome in 1950, he became active in the Association for Retarded Children and later the Association for Retarded Citizens. He became a member of the White Haven Association. He and his wife, Eleanor, as individuals, provided hundreds of holiday presents for the residents at White Haven Institution. He continued this after her death every year.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Donated by Nippert’s son, Charles R. Nippert, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Nippert. Dr. Charles Nippert Jr., a professor at Widener University, was a Lehigh grad with Chemical Engineering degree. His wife was a librarian at Cedar Crest College and their son Colin Cochrane Nippert also graduated from Lehigh Class 2003 BSEE. Material was picked up directly from Nippert Sr.’s house Allentown, Pennsylvania. First pickup was on July 12, 2012 and second pick up was on May 20, 2014.
