Identifier: SC MS0446

Scope and Contents

This item is a portfolio compiled by the then Assistant Professor William J. Eney and printed by Charles W. Speidel of Philadelphia to acquaint civil engineering students with the fundamentals of the various kinds of lines used in drawings and the way to draw them. Walter E. Miller is the student who used the portfolio for his course work in Civil Engineering 1. Miller was originally of the Class of 1944 but due to World War II delayed getting a BS degree until 1947.

Biographical / Historical

William Joseph Eney (1906-1981) was a prominent civil engineering professor at Lehigh University, as well as chairman of the Civil Engineering Department until David A. VanHorn was elected chairman and director of Fritz Engineering Laboratory until Lynn S. Beedle was appointed encompassing the 1930s to 1970s. He was instrumental in the building of the new Fritz Engineering Laboratory (1953-1955) and the installation of the world’s largest universal testing machine built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania still in operation. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, attended Johns Hopkins University earning a civil engineering degree with honors in 1927, from Lehigh University a Masters degree in civil engineering in 1938. He was married to Florence Davis Eney (1906-2004) also from Baltimore and they had a daughter, Lois Eney Winston (d.2017) of Morgantown, West Virginia. Professor Eney compiled this portfolio as an aid for civil engineering students to acquaint themselves with the fundamentals of drawing and understanding the various types of lines used in civil engineering plans. Professor Eney also designed the Eney Deformeter as a teaching tool in the days before three-dimensional analysis by computer existed. Apparently Civil Engineering course No. 1 was taught in Room 108, Packer Hall [greatly renovated in 2023-2025 so room no longer exists]. Walter E. Miller LU’47BS was the student who used this item in his early study of civil engineering. He originally was with the Class of 1944 but due to World War II, he did not get his Lehigh degree until 1947. Mr. Miller was an engineer with Dupont Company in Wilmington, Delaware.

Extent

1 book (28 sheets of examples and practice work pages beginning from August 11, 1940 to January 14, 1941. Professor Eney taught the Civil Engineering Department’s Summer Surveying course as well as the Fall and Winter curriculum thereby accounting for the range of dates. Cover and title page is worn and tattered.) ; 1 portfolio measuring 29 x 15 x .25 cm
