Abstract The collection is made up of letters and family mementos from the Carter, Lewis, and Battersby families. The three families lived in New York around Staten Island, Greenwich, and New York City, and in New Jersey. The Batterbies are an extended family of the Carters, and they are connected to the Lewis’s through the marriage of Robert Lewis and Carol Carter. Abstract

The Bible was originally acquired by a Lehigh University professor, Charles Leander Doolittle and his first wife, as a family Christmas gift. Professor Doolittle recorded family events in this book: marriages, births and deaths.The Bible contains interleaved ephemera and slips documenting important dates for the family. It also contains a draft an early poem written by Charles’ daughter, the novelist and poet, Hilda Doolittle (also known as HD).
