Scope and Contents

This Collection consists of five folders filed in one archival box. The folders contain reports, correspondence and maps by Robert M. Wheeler as well as many other Bethlehem Steel employees and photographs. Most of the material refers to the Bethlehem Cornwall Corporation holdings – the Cornwall Iron Mine and the Grace Mine, however there is included a report from the Bethlehem Mines Corporation regarding their Ellsworth-Butler Division.

Biographical / Historical

Robert M. Wheeler was born in LaJolla, California in the year 1916. He graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1939. Wheeler joined Bethlehem Steel Corporation's iron ore operation in Cornwall, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania in 1939, and served on the engineering staff until 1946 when he joined the operations department. He was Mine Captain of No. 3 Mine at the Cornwall Iron Mines. In 1966, he transferred to the mining department corporate headquarters in Bethlehem, where he was liaison for foreign and domestic operations. After retiring from Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1978, he became chief of mining engineers with Reserve Oil and Minerals and Co. in New Mexico, working on diverse mining projects. Wheeler lived in New Mexico until he passed away in 1987.

Abstract

Documents and photographs assembled by Robert M. Wheeler primarily of the portion of his career as Mine Captain of No. 3 mine at the Cornwall Iron Mine, a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. His contributions to the iron ore operation in the Cornwall Iron Mine as well as other mines belonging to the Bethlehem Cornwall Corporation were valued by the Bethlehem executives based on the correspondence content. Mr. Wheeler’s material gives an insight into open pit and underground mining operations and the safety issues involved.
